If you plan a remodeling of the kitchen or the construction of a new one, the understanding of some key measures and organizational guidelines can help make your culinary life better and more pleasant. That’s why it’s important to consider some kitchen design tricks.
Triangle of work in the design of kitchens
The kitchens provide storage for food and utensils, offer a space for the preparation and cleaning of food, and of course also provide a place where you can cook and bake. When organized carefully, these functions operate logically, which makes the work in the kitchen a better experience. We give you some tips to get an ideal configuration.
Ideally, refrigeration and storage of food should be located near the point of entry to the kitchen. The kitchen area should be located next to the dining room, and the sink is best placed between those two functions. This creates what is called a working triangle. This working triangle must be less than 6.5 meters. Work triangles that exceed 8 meters pass from one function to the other inefficiently in most cases.
This drawing illustrates a distribution and dimensions for a kitchen of modest size (the measurements are in inches). Keep in mind that the preparation area is divided between the island, the sink and the corner of the kitchen. The working triangle is compact and practical.
Functions of a kitchen
Let’s look at the three main functions of a kitchen:
- Food preparation
We all have personal preferences, so consider this as a guide and not a series of rules.
As noted, the designers recommend putting refrigeration and storage at the kitchen entry point. Putting your pantry on one side and a 40 to 60 centimeter counter on the other is a good idea. This will allow you to easily organize items that have been taken out of the refrigerator and pantry.
The pantry can contain dry products, as well as brooms and supplies such as paper towels. Use the drawers in this area to keep plastic bags, aluminum foil and anything that may contain the food that will be stored. In the cabinets in this area, there will have to be bowls, molds for cakes, utensils of measure and other elements that help in the preparation of the meals.
Ideally, the preparation and cleaning space is best placed around the sink. Inside these areas will be the glasses and plates of every day, along with the garbage receptacles and the dishwasher. Allows 45 to 90 centimeters of kitchen space on one or both sides of the sink.
The preparation areas should be kept clean and clear of other items, since you will always put bowls, plates and utensils. Leave at least 90 centimeters of space for preparing food in a small kitchen. This is one of the reasons why the islands are so popular. They provide spacious and clean surfaces in which to perform most of the kitchen tasks.
Kitchens and ovens are preferably placed against a wall. Place the pots, pans and baking pans near the burners and ovens. It is a good idea to place small appliances such as toasters and coffee makers in this area as well, since it will leave the preparation areas free of obstructions.
Allow 50 to 90 centimeters of countertop on each side of the kitchen. If possible, the wall ovens are an excellent option, as they leave free space. Place the condiments, bread boxes and pot holders in the drawers and closets.
Recommended dimensions in kitchen design
The dimensions of all the pieces in the kitchen are important to make the best use of space. A common refrigerator width is just under 90 centimeters. The problem is often depth. In recent years some manufacturers have designed them to be much deeper than a base cabinet (60 centimeters approx). You can still buy shallower refrigerators, but you have to pay close attention to the dimensions to be sure.
Another thing to consider is the swaying of the refrigerator door. Always check the direction of rotation to see if there may be an obstruction.
Here you can see how the height of the cabinets plays an important role in the configuration. The upper cupboards are usually placed 45 centimeters above the countertop and are 75 to 105 centimeters high. The standard dimensions of the base cabinets are 60 centimeters deep and 90 centimeters high. But this configuration will also depend on the height of the person who uses the kitchen most often.
